The physicians of Lucayan Medical Centre are dedicated to serving our patients with the utmost ethical and professional standards. Through active community involvement, we strive to enhance and promote the health and well-being of all residents of The Bahamas.


Dr. Knowles specializes in adult and pediatric surgery, including simple procedures such as circumcisions, hernias, breast biopsies, lumps and bumps, hemorrhoidectomies, and endoscopies. He also performs major surgeries, which include appendectomies, cholecystectomies, colonic resections, and mastectomies.
Dr. Knowles performs complex pediatric procedures, which include esophageal replacement, anti-reflux surgery, pediatric urology, and advanced pediatric colorectal surgery, in patients from birth to age 18.
He also provides antenatal consulting for congenital abnormalities detected by ultrasound during pregnancy.
Dr. Knowles received his medical degree at The University of The West Indies in Jamaica and completed his General Surgery Residency and subsequent Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at The University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa and Great Ormond St. Children’s Hospital, London, England.
He has gained additional extensive training and experience in advanced pediatric colorectal procedures and advanced minimal invasive pediatric surgery at the Colorectal Center for Children, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, University of Cincinnati and Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Knowles is a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa, a Member of The British Association of Pediatric Surgeons and a Member of The International Pediatric Endosurgery Group. He is also a member of the European Pediatric Surgery Association and a Fellow of The American College of Surgeons.


Dr. Scriven has dedicated over 30 years to advancing hearing health in The Bahamas. She earned her Bachelor’s in Speech and Hearing Science from Middle Tennessee State University, followed by a Master’s in Audiology from Howard University, where she worked at the District of Columbia General Hospital.
Returning home, she established a private practice at Doctors Hospital and launched the hospital’s Newborn Hearing Screening Programme in 2000. She also set up government audiological services at the South Beach Clinic, introducing newborn screening for at-risk infants in 2001.
In 2006, Dr. Scriven co-founded The Gift of Hearing with the Rotary Club of East Nassau, providing free hearing aids and follow-up care to those in need. She earned her Doctor of Audiology (Au.D) from the University of Florida in 2011 while continuing to serve in both private and public sectors.
Her services have included nationwide hearing screenings, hearing conservation programs for industry, and school-based assessments. She later became Head of Audiology at the hearLIFE Clinic Nassau, part of an international network specializing in cochlear implants, achieving ISO 9001:2008 Certification for quality management.
Dr. Scriven holds the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-A) and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology. She has presented internationally, pioneered The Bahamas’ first cochlear implant surgeries, and led outreach efforts that have helped hundreds access life-changing hearing solutions.
Her awards include the Paul Harris Fellow Award and recognition as one of The Bahamas’ Leading Ladies for her tireless contributions to the hearing-impaired community.

Attended McGill University, Montreal, Canada where he obtained Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degrees (1972)
Internship at Toronto General Hospital, Toronto, Canada after which he completed Internal Medicine specialty training at the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Graduate School, Rochester, Minnesota.
He is an American Board-certified Internal Medicine specialist
Dr. Bethel began private medical practice at the Antoni Clinic, Freeport in1975.
In 1978 he acquired the Lucayan Medical Centre, Freeport where he continues to serve as Consultant Internist and Administrator.


Dr. Monique Mitchell, DPM is a board-certified podiatrist and wound care specialist with over 15 years of podiatry experience and more than 30 years in health care. A former registered nurse and public health educator, she earned her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine with honors from Barry University and completed residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach.
Passionate about diabetic foot health, Dr. Mitchell is a Bahamas and Caribbean Certified Diabetes Educator, Certified Health Education Specialist, and Lifestyle Medicine Professional. She has developed community programs such as Feet Can Last a Lifetime and founded Feet4Life, an online resource for people living with diabetes.
She currently serves as Chair of the Bahamas Podiatric Medical Association and as National Representative to D-Foot International, working to advance diabetic foot care locally and globally.


Dr. Owen Bastian is a highly skilled dentist dedicated to providing exceptional care. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Beloit College in Wisconsin, followed by a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. He further honed his expertise through a General Practice Residency at Catholic Medical Center in conjunction with New York Medical College. Dr. Bastian is known for his meticulous approach and compassionate care, ensuring each patient receives personalized and attentive treatment. His commitment to excellence and patient well-being is evident in every aspect of his practice.
